The Curse of the Babe

So, no such thing as curses, eh?  Pure silliness, eh?  Next  time you run into a Bostonian, mention the name Bill Buckner, take one giant step backwards, and watch the smoke pour from his ears!

And now, for you unbelievers, let's analyze the facts, shall we:

  1. The Boston Pilgrims (later to be known as the Red Sox) won the very first World Series ever, held in 1903.

  2. The Red Sox became one of the most dominant teams in the 1910's, appearing in four World Series between 1912-1918, winning all four.

  3. Now, maybe you've heard of a baseball player named Babe Ruth.  Still considered one of baseball's best players, he was a member of the Red Sox while they were such the dominant team.

  4. Have you heard of Harry Frazee?  Mr. Frazee owned the Red Sox.  Mr. Frazee had a girlfriend.  Girlfriend had written a play.  Girlfriend needs money to finance play.  Mr. Frazee needs girlfriend.  You get the picture.

  5. On comes 1920.  Mr. Frazee agrees to sell Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees for $100,000 (to help finance his girlfriend's play).

  6. The New York Yankees appeared in the World Series six of the next 8 years (they had never made an appearance prior).  In fact, the Yankees went on to be the most consistent team over the next 80 years, appearing in the World Series a remarkable 35 times, winning 26 of those appearances.

  7. The Boston Red Sox have not won a World Series since 1918, appearing only four times as of 2002, and losing all four times in the maximum seven games.

  8. The Red Sox' appearances in 1946 and 1967 were both losses to the St. Louis Cardinals.

  9. The Red Sox played the Cincinnati Reds in 1975, in a World Series that many baseball purists still consider the greatest World Series of all time.  In game 6, with the Reds boasting a 3-2 game lead, the Red Sox scored the first three runs of the game, only to see the Reds score the next six.  But, the Red Sox tied the score and forced extra innings.  Then, in the bottom of the 12th inning, in one of the most dramatic finishes to one of the most dramatic games, the Red Sox' Carlton Fisk hits a game-winning homerun off of the left field foul pole to give the Red Sox the victory.  The World Series went to the final game 7, the Red Sox again scored the first three runs, but the Reds came back to win the World Series, scoring their final run in the top of the 9th in the one-run win - another disappointing loss for the Bosox.

  10. In the 1986 World Series between the Red Sox and the New York Mets, game 6 featured the most bizarre ending to any game in World Series history.  And, you guessed it, the Sox lost another one.

And, of course, the curse was apparently broken in 2004, as the Reds Sox became the only team to come back from a three-game deficit in a post-season series to win the next four games against the hated Yankees in the American League Playoffs prior to sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals to win the World Series.

And with the Chicago White Sox victorious in the 2005 World Series, that leaves the Chicago Cubs as the only team not to win a World Series since before 1910.

I wonder where Steve Bartman is now - Curse of the Goat, anyone?!?
